These terms govern the self-drive rental of vehicles and the use of this website. By sending a booking request you confirm that you have read and accept them. The rental agreement you sign when you collect the vehicle completes these terms.
1. Who we are
The service is provided by Casavant, Lda. (which operates the FBCrent brand), tax ID (NIF) 508 083 508, with registered office at Estrada da Papanata 215 4900-470 Viana do Castelo. Contact: reservas@fbcrent.com · +351 258 817 287. We have rented self-drive cars since January 2008, with branches in Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima.
2. Who can rent
- Minimum driver age: 18 years. Drivers under 21 or with less than 1 year of licence pay a daily fee, shown in the booking before you send it.
- At pick-up you must present: an ID document (citizen card, passport or residence permit), a valid driving licence and a physical credit card in the name of the customer or the driver for the deposit.
- Only the contract holder and additional drivers registered in the contract may drive, all with the documents above.
- We may refuse the rental if the documents are not presented, do not match the booking details, or if there are well-founded doubts about the driver's fitness to drive.
3. How booking works
- You choose dates, locations and vehicle on the website and send a booking request. Vehicle groups are "model or similar": the exact model is not guaranteed.
- The request is not a confirmed booking. Our branch checks availability and replies by email. If it is not confirmed there is no booking and you will need to make a new request.
- After the booking is confirmed, a partial or full payment of the booking may be requested. With the confirmation we may ask for payment by Multibanco reference to finalise the pre-booking, within the period stated in the email (by default 3 days). If payment is not made within that period, the pre-booking may be released.
- The details you give must be true and complete. Errors in driver details or dates may prevent pick-up.
4. Prices
- All prices shown include VAT at the legal rate in force.
- The rental price is calculated per day, according to the season each day falls in and the total length (in many cases, the more days, the lower the daily price). If the rental crosses two seasons, each day is charged at the price of its season.
- The price you see in your request is the one recorded for that request. Our rates may be updated at any time, with no effect on confirmed bookings.
- The rental price includes basic protection (with an excess), the kilometres stated for the group and VAT. It does not include fuel, tolls, extras, optional services, young-driver fees, delivery/collection outside the branch, or fines.
- Promo codes apply to the rental amount (not extras), within each code's validity and rules, and cannot be combined unless stated.
5. Deposit
- At pick-up a pre-authorisation (deposit) is made on a physical credit card in the name of the customer or the driver. The amount depends on the vehicle group and the protection chosen and is shown in your request.
- Digitally generated (virtual) cards are not accepted, nor are debit or prepaid cards, for the deposit. The card must be physical and in the name of the customer or the driver.
- The deposit is released after the vehicle is returned and checked. The time the bank takes to release the funds is outside our control. We may charge outstanding amounts to the deposit (damage, excess, missing fuel, fines, fees).
6. Pick-up and return
- Pick-up hours: 09:00–12:15 and 14:00–18:00. Return hours: 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–18:00. Outside these hours pick-up and return are not possible unless agreed in writing beforehand.
- The rental is counted in 24-hour periods from the pick-up time. There is a return grace period of 59 minutes; after that an additional day is charged at the applicable price.
- The vehicle is handed over in good working order and clean, with the fuel level recorded in the contract, and must be returned in the same condition and with the same fuel level. Check it at pick-up and note any existing damage on the contract. Missing fuel is charged at the price per litre plus a service fee.
- Returning to a different branch is only possible if stated in the booking.
- The vehicle must be returned clean. A cleaning fee may be charged if it is returned excessively dirty, with odours (including tobacco) or hard-to-clean damage.
7. Kilometres
Included kilometres depend on the group and are shown in your request (some groups have unlimited kilometres). For monthly rentals, included kilometres are stated per month in the proposal. Kilometres above the included amount are charged at the group's price per kilometre. You can add extra-kilometre packs when booking.
8. Insurance, protection and excess
- All vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance.
- Basic protection is included and covers damage to the vehicle as set out in the contract, leaving the group's excess, shown in your booking, payable by you. You can add protection options that reduce or remove the excess.
- Protection does not cover, among others: damage caused wilfully or by gross negligence; driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication affecting driving; driving by an unauthorised person; use outside the contract terms or off paved roads; refuelling with the wrong fuel; loss of or damage to keys, documents and number plates; interior damage (unless cover was bought); theft when the vehicle is left unlocked or with the keys inside; and personal items left in the vehicle.
- The customer is liable for all damage not covered by protection, up to the vehicle's value, and for loss of use (days out of service) where the law allows.
9. Using the vehicle
- The vehicle is for normal private or business use on paved roads in mainland Portugal. Driving in other countries (for example Spain) requires prior authorisation and the territorial extension.
- It is forbidden to: sub-let or lend; carry passengers or goods for payment (taxi, ride-hailing, hire transport); take part in races, tests or competitions; tow; drive off-road; carry dangerous or illegal goods or overload; smoke inside; carry animals outside a carrier or without suitable protection; alter or repair the vehicle without permission.
- The driver must obey the Highway Code, wear a seat belt, use a child seat where required and keep the vehicle locked when parked.
10. Breakdown, accident and theft
- Breakdown: contact us immediately on +351 258 817 287. Do not have the vehicle repaired without our authorisation.
- Accident: call the authorities if there are injuries or significant damage; complete the joint accident statement; do not admit fault; take the other party's and witnesses' details; and tell us the same day. Failing to follow these rules may void protection cover.
- Theft: report it to the PSP or GNR immediately and give us the report and all the keys.
11. Fines, tolls and offences
The customer is responsible for all fines, penalties, tolls, parking and costs relating to the rental period, even if notified later. We are required by law to identify the driver to the authorities, so your details will be disclosed. An administrative fee for handling each case, stated in the contract, may be charged on top of the amount of the offence.
12. Extras, additional drivers and delivery
- You can add extras to your request (additional driver, child seat, booster, GPS, territorial extension, extra kilometres, protection options). Some extras are subject to later confirmation of availability.
- Additional drivers must meet the conditions in section 2 and be named in the contract.
- Delivery and collection at your company is available in the areas shown in the request, at extra cost, and depends on availability: FBCrent reserves the right to accept or decline it (it may not be available or feasible). On delivery, the person receiving the vehicle must be the registered holder or driver, with the documents and the deposit card.
13. Cancellations, changes and no-shows
- You can ask for changes or cancellation by email or phone, quoting the booking reference. The conditions that apply to each booking, including what happens to amounts already paid by Multibanco reference, are those stated in the confirmation.
- If you do not show up at pick-up without prior notice, or you arrive without the required documents, the booking may be cancelled and amounts paid may not be refunded, as set out in the confirmation.
- If we do not have the vehicle available, we will tell you and, if you have already paid, we will refund the amount or propose an alternative you accept.
14. Right of withdrawal
Because vehicle rental for a specific date or period falls under the exceptions in article 17 of Decree-Law 24/2014 (distance contracts), there is no 14-day right of withdrawal. This does not affect the cancellation conditions in section 13.
15. Monthly rental
Monthly rental (1 to 12 months) cannot be booked online. You request a proposal, we assess each case, and the terms (monthly price, kilometres, deposit, protection and duration) are set out in the proposal accepted by both parties. These terms apply to anything the proposal does not regulate differently.
16. Personal data
We handle your personal data as explained in the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Policy.
17. Liability
We are not liable for delays, impossibility or damage caused by circumstances beyond our control (for example sudden breakdown, strikes, extreme weather, decisions of the authorities), nor for loss of profit or indirect damage, to the extent permitted by law. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the law gives you as a consumer.
18. Complaints and disputes
- You can complain in the Complaints Book (available at our branches and at livroreclamacoes.pt) or directly to us by email or phone.
- For a consumer dispute you can turn to an alternative dispute resolution body. You can find the list on the Consumer Portal (Portuguese).
19. Governing law
These terms are governed by Portuguese law. Without prejudice to the rights the law gives consumers, disputes will be settled by the competent Portuguese courts.
20. Changes
We may update these terms. The version that applies to each booking is the one in force when the request was sent. The date of the last update is at the top of this page.
